Anchorage, AK March 1, 2026 – Alaska Center for Dermatology formally announces the addition of Dr. Steve Austad, DO, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, to its growing team of providers. With more than 14 years of combined clinical experience and a distinguished background in military medicine, Dr. Austad brings exceptional expertise in surgical dermatology, particularly Mohs micrographic surgery, to patients across Alaska.
Dr. Austad earned his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, with double minors in Chemistry and Zoology, from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He went on to receive his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University/AZCOM in Glendale, Arizona. After medical school, he completed a transitional internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego before entering the Naval flight surgery training program in Pensacola, Florida.
During his active-duty service, Dr. Austad served as a flight surgeon and medical department head for VMA-211 and VMFA-121 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, and later with VX-9 in China Lake, California. While on his final assignment, he completed a Master of Business Administration at UCLA. He separated from active duty with numerous honors, including the Fleet Marine Force qualification, National Service Medal, War on Terror Medal, multiple Commendation Medals, and rifle and pistol qualifications.
Following his military service, Dr. Austad continued serving as a Navy reservist while completing his dermatology residency at Prime West Consortium–Newport Beach. He graduated in 2022 and subsequently pursued specialized fellowship training in Mohs surgery in Portland, Oregon. Today, he is double board-certified in Dermatology and Mohs surgery and remains committed to service in the Air National Guard with the 142nd Medical Group in Portland.
Dr. Austad is especially passionate about surgical dermatology, with a particular focus on Mohs micrographic surgery – a highly precise, tissue-sparing technique used to treat skin cancer. His meticulous approach, combined with his extensive medical and surgical training, allows him to provide patients with advanced, effective care for both common and complex dermatologic conditions.
“It is my goal for patients to feel they are in a better place mentally and/or physically when they leave my office than when they arrived,” is Dr. Austad’s philosophy regarding patient care.
He is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, reflecting his ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and professional development.
Alaska Center for Dermatology is pleased to welcome Dr. Austad and looks forward to the expertise and compassionate care he will provide for patients throughout the region.
