MetroDerm’s Dr. Pearl Rimtepathip Featured in The Manual with Expert Tips on Treating Sunburn Peeling

Our own Dr. Pearl Rimtepathip, MD, a Board-Certified Dermatologist at MetroDerm in Atlanta, has been featured in The Manual’s latest skin care article, Sunburn Peeling Is the Worst Here’s How Dermatologists Say to Stop It.” With summer in full swing and sunburns still a seasonal concern, Dr. Pearl shares her professional advice on how to care for your skin when it starts to peel.

“Peeling or flaking happens when the body sheds the outer layer of the skin,” Dr. Pearl explains. “The process is normal for the body to rid damaged skin to reveal a healthier layer.” While this is a natural healing response, the discomfort it brings can be frustrating. Fortunately, Dr. Pearl offers smart, soothing solutions.

She recommends using products that contain gentle exfoliants, such as lactic acid. “These help with skin peeling by disrupting the ‘glue’ that holds the dead skin cells together, allowing them to slough off to reveal underlying healthy skin,” she says.

However, not all skin care habits are beneficial during this time. While a warm bath may feel comforting, Dr. Pearl advises against it during active peeling. “You’re exposed to water for longer stretches while bathing, which can increase the acidity in the skin. This increased acidity weakens the skin barrier and can trigger more flaking and peeling.”

Prevention is always key, and Dr. Pearl reminds us that daily sun protection is non-negotiable. “I recommend wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily with frequent application every two to three hours… especially when outdoors,” she emphasizes.

Post-sun care matters too. “I recommend moisturizing as part of your skin care routine, especially after a bath, during a time when your skin is not peeling,” she advises. For maximum hydration, she suggests rich, protective options: “Use a moisturizer with a petrolatum-based product, such as Vaseline or Aquaphor, twice daily. It creates a barrier on the skin, locks in moisture, and reduces water loss.”
